Everything You Need To Know About Tonsillectomy
What is it?
A tonsillectomy is thus the surgical process that is done by the otolaryngologist’s doctors to remove the tonsils. However, the tonsils are the protective rings present in the backside of the mouth and the nasal cavity and are highly considered as part of the immune system. It further helps to prevent germs, viruses, bacteria, and also make sure that they do not enter the body with the help of the nose and mouth.
Normally, the tonsils are of three types that include:
- Palatine tonsils remain in the top of the throat.
- Lingual tonsil or tonsil lingual, just below the palatine tonsils.
- Adenoids or tonsilla pharyngealis remain in the nasal cavity.
These remain in the largest form in children and gradually they become smaller in the adult age. When the tonsils get infected on their own tonsillitis can take make further making your glands swell with a sore throat. If a person is witnessing frequent visits of tonsillitis then performing the tonsillectomy is a mandatory situation.
Some symptoms of tonsillitis include high fever, swollen glands, pain while swallowing, redness, and many more.
A 2015 study report stated that adults who opted for the tonsillectomy saw an overall improvement in health and quality of life. However, this study was only conducted among 100 persons. Also, it is found that this surgery can also be performed for treating several breathing problems, including heavy snoring, and sleep apnea.
When it is needed
Tonsillectomy is a common surgical process found in children compared to adults. Nevertheless, people of any age can think of these surgeries when they will face trouble with their tonsils.
Furthermore, a person should think about tonsillectomy, surgical process, if they find their tonsillitis:
- To come back again and again, which means coming of the infection:
– At least seven times of occurring in the preceding year.
– Three times of occurring in the past three years.
– More than five times of occurring in the past two years.
- Creates other problems including sleep apnea or snoring.
- Inflammation of the tonsils is further caused by infections and strep throat.
- Also, people with fewer tonsil issues including tumors, and abbesses can think of this surgery.
This process of removing tonsils can also be performed to treat other medical problems including the following:
- Bleeding of the tonsils
- Cancer and tumor of tonsils
- Loud and frequent snoring
However, the doctor will examine your health and mouth and if found any of these things then he/ she can further perform the tonsillectomy.
Procedure
There are several types of processes involved in the removal of tonsils. No matter what kind of process is performed by the doctor, you will first provide anesthesia so that you cannot feel the surgery, and can remain in deep sleep. Also, before performing this surgery you should avoid all kinds of anti-inflammatory medications especially ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen. However, these kinds of drugs can increase the amount of bleeding in a person. Your doctor should know about the medications and the time when you stopped using them.
Normally, this surgery demands a time span of 20-30 minutes when you will be at deep sleep and cannot feel any pain while your doctor will remove the tonsils. The most common forms of performing the tonsillectomy are further listed below:
- Cold Knife (Steel) DissectionIn this process, the tonsils are removed with the help of the scalpel. The bleeding caused in this process is further stopped with the sutures or with the help of extreme heat commonly called electrocautery.
- ElectrocauteryThis is a method that uses heat to remove the tonsil glands from inside the mouth and can also stop excessive bleeding.
- Radiofrequency ablationThis is another form of technology that helps to remove the tonsils glands. In this process, further, a carbon dioxide laser or a microdebrider is used. This is a unique form of surgery involved to remove the tonsils.
- Harmonic ScalpelLast but not least is the use of ultrasonic vibrations that further helps to cut out and stop the bleeding from the tonsils by smoothing removing from its accurate positions.
However, the recovery from this tonsillectomy can differ from person to person. People can also witness some pains and bleeding around the neck, ears, and jaws. Thus it is recommended to consume a huge amount of soft foods and take plenty of rest.
Conclusion
You should consult before and after performing the tonsillectomy with the doctor. You should what things you can perform after performing the surgery. Also, take the medications that are prescribed by the doctors no matter what especially at the time of recovery. In this, you can not feel pain with this surgery.
