Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a kind of surgery in which the form of the nose is altered. The goal of rhinoplasty surgery may be to enhance the nose’s aesthetics, improve breathing, or a combination of the two.

The top section of the nose’s structure is bone, while the bottom portion is cartilage. Rhinoplasty may alter the bone, cartilage, and skin of the nose, or all three. Consult with your plastic surgeon about if rhinoplasty is a good option for you and what you may expect from the procedure.

When planning a rhinoplasty procedure, your surgeon will consider your other facial characteristics, the skin on your nose, and the changes you want to make. If you are a candidate for surgery, your surgeon will create a treatment plan specific to your needs.

Everything You Need To Know About Rhinoplasty

What is it?

Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic treatment used to alter the size or shape of the nose to produce more stability and symmetry of the facial characteristics and enhance overall attractiveness. It may also be done simultaneously as operations to enhance the function of the nose, such as addressing breathing obstructions, if necessary.

Why it’s done

Rhinoplasty is performed to repair the nose after an accident, cure breathing issues or a congenital deformity, or simply because the patient is dissatisfied with the look of their nose.

The following are examples of alterations that your surgeon may be able to make to your nose via rhinoplasty:

  • A change in size
  • Straightening of the bridge
  • A change in angle
  • Changing the shape of the tip
  • Narrowing of the nasal passages

Unless your rhinoplasty is being performed to benefit your health rather than your looks, you should wait until your nasal bone has completely developed before proceeding. This occurs around the age of 15 for females, and boys may continue to develop till they reach adulthood. For those who need rhinoplasty to correct a breathing problem, the procedure may be done at a younger age

Procedure

Rhinoplasty surgery is performed under local anaesthetic with sedation or under general anaesthesia, depending on the complexity of the procedure and your physician’s preference. To determine which form of anaesthetic is best for you, consult with your physician before your operation.

  • Local anaesthesia with sedation: This sort of anaesthetic is usually administered in a non-hospital environment, and it just affects a certain part of your body. Your doctor injects a pain-numbing medicine into your nasal tissues and sedates you with medication put into your veins via an intravenous (IV) line to relieve your discomfort. This causes you to feel sleepy but not completely asleep.
  • General anaesthesia: The medicine (anaesthetic) is administered either by inhalation or through a tiny tube (IV line) put in a vein in your wrist, neck, or chest. General anaesthesia is a kind of operation that affects your complete body and renders you unconscious throughout the procedure. A breathing tube is required for general anaesthesia.

Rhinoplasty may be performed either within the nose or by a tiny exterior cut (incision) made at the base of the nose, between the nostrils, to achieve the desired results. Your surgeon will almost certainly realign the bone and cartilage under your skin.

Your surgeon may alter the form of your nasal bones or cartilage in a variety of ways, depending on how much bone or cartilage has to be removed or added, the anatomy of your nose, and the available materials. In the case of minor adjustments, the surgeon may utilise cartilage harvested from further inside your nose or from within your ear. If your surgeon has to make more significant alterations, he or she may utilise cartilage from your rib, implants, or bone from other areas of your body. After completing these modifications, the surgeon reattaches the skin and tissue of the nose and closes the incisions in your nose.

If the septum (the wall that separates the two sides of the nose) is curved or crooked (deviated), the surgeon may also repair it to make breathing more comfortable.

After the procedure, you’ll be sent to a recovery area, where the personnel will keep track of your progress toward awakening. You might depart later in the day or, if you have any additional health difficulties, you could spend the whole day and night.

Conclusion

Although rhinoplasty is a very safe and straightforward treatment, the recovery period after it may be lengthy. The tip of your nose is particularly sensitive, and it might stay numb and swollen for many months after an injury. Although you may be completely cured in a few weeks, certain side effects may last for many months. It might take up to a year before you can completely appreciate the outcome of your surgical procedure.
