As a pediatrician at ONP Hospitals, I’ve witnessed countless stories of resilience and recovery, but one case stands out—little Anaya’s story. Anaya, a spirited four-year-old, came to us after a severe finger injury that happened while she was playing in the backyard....
Overview
Urologists are doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating illnesses of the urinary system in both men and women. They may also identify and treat any problems that men have with their reproductive system.
In certain instances, they may be required to conduct surgery. For example, they may be able to remove cancer or unblock a blocked urinary tract. Tumor urologists may be found working in various settings such as hospitals, private clinics, and urology institutions.
Everything You Need To Know About Urology
What Is It?
Urology is a branch of medicine specializing in treating illnesses of the male and female urinary tracts (kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra). It also has to do with the male organs capable of producing children (penis, testes, scrotum, prostate, etc.). Because health issues in these bodily parts may affect anybody, maintaining good urologic health is essential.
Urology is traditionally thought of as a surgical specialty. A urologist is a doctor who, in addition to doing surgery, has knowledge of internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, and other aspects of health care. So it is because urologists deal with a diverse spectrum of clinical conditions.
Conditions
Specialized services are available in a variety of fields, including:
- Urologic oncology: Cancers of the kidney, bladder, prostate, testicles, penis, ureter, and renal pelvis, as well as retroperitoneal and pelvic sarcomas, Wilms’ tumors, and juvenile sarcomas, are all conditions that urologists deal with daily.
- Impotence, infertility, and andrology: Services include fertility preservation and restoration, penile reconstruction, and surgical and non-invasive treatments for erectile dysfunction.
- Pediatric urology: In addition to treating voiding dysfunction, urologic malignancies, and birth deformities (congenital anomalies) of the urinary system, pediatric urologists also do reconstructive surgery on the urinary tract.
- Stone disease and endourology: Urologists’ treatment of kidney stones and other urinary tract stones is minimally invasive and non-invasive.
- Reconstructive urology and neurourology: Doctors of urology treat patients with neurological diseases that impact the urinary tract. They also provide urinary tract repair for those who have been injured or traumatized.
- Men’s health conditions: It is the responsibility of the urologists to offer treatment for a broad variety of disorders impacting men’s health, including prostate cancer screening and prevention and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
- Women’s health conditions: Restoring urinary incontinence, repairing pelvic organ prolapse, and treating other diseases that impact a woman’s urinary tract or pelvic organs are all areas of expertise for your urologists.
Symptoms
In the case of minor urinary disorders, such as a UTI, your primary care physician may provide treatment. However, suppose your symptoms do not improve or have a disease that requires therapy that your primary care doctor cannot offer. In that case, your doctor may send you to a urologist for further evaluation.
Certain problems may need the consultation of a urologist as well as another expert. For example, a man with prostate cancer may consult with a cancer expert known as an “oncologist” and a urologist for treatment.
Is it possible to tell when it’s time to consult with a urologist? For example, if you have any of the following symptoms, you may have an issue with your urinary tract:
- Urine containing blood
- Having a frequent or urgent need to go to the bathroom
- Lower back, pelvic, or side pain are all possible symptoms
- Experiencing discomfort or burning when urinating
- Having difficulty urinating
- Leakage of urine
- Dribbling pee due to insufficient urine flow
If you’re a guy and you’re having any of the following symptoms, you should consult with a urologist:
- A decline in one’s desire to have sexual relations
- There is a lump in the testicle.
- Having difficulty obtaining or maintaining an erection
What procedures do Urologists perform?
A urologist will perform one or more of the following tests to determine what kind of problem you have:
- Images obtained via imaging procedures such as CT, MRI, or ultrasound enable doctors to look within the urinary system.
- They may arrange a cystogram, which includes obtaining X-rays of your bladder.
- Your urologist may perform a cystoscopy. In this procedure, a cystoscope is used to see the inside of your bladder and urethra using an ultra-thin scope.
- A post-void residual urine test may be used to determine how quickly your body excretes pee during urination. It also displays how much pee is still in your bladder after urination.
- A urine sample may be used to detect the presence of germs that might cause illnesses.
- To determine the pressure and volume in your bladder, they may undergo urodynamic testing.
Conclusion
Pediatric Urology (children’s urology), Urologic Oncology (urologic cancers), Renal (kidney) Transplant, Male Infertility, Calculi (urinary tract stones), Female Urology, and Neurourology are all subspecialties within urology (nervous system control of genitourinary organs). It means that you should consult a urologist if you have any issues with your urological health.
