Overview
Pelvic reconstruction is a type of surgery that occurs on the pelvic floor focusing on the correction of pelvic floor muscles with the help of a synthetic mesh. According to reports, in the United States, almost one out of five women has a prolapsed pelvic area which is why they witness the continuous leaking of urine and pain in that area. This can be thought of by women who are sexually active but facing some severe dislocation of the vagina or uterus.
Everything you need to know about Pelvic Reconstruction
What is it?
Reconstruction of the Pelvic floor is a group of surgical procedures performed to treat the pelvic organ prolapsed. The relapse is further a condition that takes place when the pelvic floor muscles are damaged or weakened.
Furthermore, the pelvic floor includes the ligaments, muscles, nerves, and connective tissues that underpin the bladder, vagina, uterus, and rectum. This is important as it gives the structure of the pelvis in the right way.
When non-surgical treatments are not effective, pelvic floor reconstruction is used to restore the natural shape and functioning of the female pelvic organs. This surgery to cure pelvic problems can be further perfumed either through the abdomen or through the vagina.
Conditions that need it
If a person is witnessing POP symptoms then, she can think of performing pelvic surgery. Some of the common conditions that lead to the use of this surgery include the following:
- The bulge in the Vagina
- Leakage of Urine
- An intolerable fullness feeling with the feeling of pelvic pressure
- Organs bulging out of the Vagina
- Problem with bowel movement
- Unable to empty the bladder
- Difficulty in inserting tampons and other applicators
- Lower back pain
Normally after processing childbirth, this kind of situation happens in a woman. Some other circumstances that can cause the prolapsed include heavy lifting, surgery, or chronic disease.
However, the pelvic floor muscles, when gets damaged, these symptoms occur as it fails to bear the weight of the muscle and further press against the walls of the vagina. Women witnessing these conditions can think of this surgery.
Types
To understand the types of Pelvic Construction, you have to first understand the working process of these. The main aim of this surgery is to repair and rebuild the pelvic floor abnormalities without removing the organs. Some of the common types and procedures involved in this surgery include:
Transvaginal Graft
In this type of surgery, the doctors opt for the synthetic or biological mesh to restore the weakened tissues in the pelvic floor. Furthermore, the transvaginal graft is placed with the help of an incision on the vagina.
Native Tissue Repair
In this type of reconstruction, the doctors utilize the tissues from the patient’s body o repair the floor. These are not highly invasive and can demand a small number of incisions in the vaginal and abdominal areas.
Urethral Sling Process
Another name for Urethral sing is Pubovaginal sling and is used to support the sphincter muscles of the urethra. The pubovaginal sling is a synthetic hammock-like device placed underneath the urethra to stop urine leakage.
This is, however, performed with the help of a tiny incision below the belly button. This is not a lengthy process and can demand almost 30 minutes. However, before performing this, general anesthesia is required. Within two weeks, the patients can perform their daily works.
Vaginal Repair of Pelvic Organ
This type of reconstruction is quite common and is also considered prolapsed surgery performed transvaginally or in the abdomen. This is the least invasive method that demands zero incisions. In this process, the fallen organs are repositioned with the help of stitches with the proximal ligaments or tissues.
This process can demand recovery of three to four weeks and is performed within the time gap of 1-2 days. The patients, however, are restricted from performing sexual activities and heavy-duty works for almost two to three months.
Robotic Sacrocolpopexy
A sacrocolpopexy is used to further repair the dropping of the pelvic floor organs, including the uterus, vagina, and bladder. A mesh is further used to support the area back in its anatomical position. The traditional sacrocolpopexy further demands an incision of a large horizontal in the lower abdomen to reach the required organs.
Robotic sacrocolpopexy is further performed with a small incision using some surgical instruments, and further follows the da Vinci@ Surgical System.
When to see a doctor?
Women who treat interstitial cystitis, urinary inconsistence, vaginal prolapsed, fistulae, or rectal prolapsed conditions can consider visiting a doctor. Generally, a doctor suggests that it is better to perform this surgery after completing their family as after childbirth, this can again happen, and more surgeries can be demanded then. A women’s health and other physical factors like age and sex also play a great factor in determining the right time to perform this surgery.
However, it is recommended that when a woman notices the POP symptoms should visit the doctor and consult in detail about the reconstruction surgery.
Conclusion
Thus, the reconstruction of the Pelvis is a necessary surgery for women who face various types of difficulties of POP. This surgery can remove treat the POP conditions and further make them able to lead a life without any trouble.

They all recommended knee replacement surgery, but it was only when we discovered Dr. Aashish Arbat and the option of robotics surgery that we made the decision to proceed. The surgery took place on June 23, 2023, and it turned out to be an incredible experience. To our astonishment, on the morning of June 24, my mother was able to stand on her own legs and even take a few steps. This remarkable progress was made possible due to the advanced assistance of robotics arm and Artificial Intelligence. Dr. Aashish Arbat is an exceptional and highly experienced surgeon, and we are immensely grateful for his expertise. We also extend our appreciation to his colleagues, Dr. Sharma and Dr. Ram, for their excellent skills and compassionate nature.
